How Do Electric Cycles Work | EMotorad

At the heart an e-bikes is a bicycle but just with some upgradation. Despite the similarities to normal bikes, with e-bikes there's one obvious difference and that is the electric motor. There are three key components that differentiate an e-bike from a normal bike - the battery, motor and sensor.

Battery: The battery simply dictates how far you can go. More expensive batteries will hold more charge and therefore carry you further. E-bike batteries are made from lithium-ion - the same material as is used to power electric cars. You recharge them by plugging them into an electrical socket, just like a mobile phone. You can leave the battery on the bike while it's plugged in to charge, or take it off and charge it away from the bike. Additional battery packs are available to purchase.

Motor: A motor controls the torque. The more advanced the electric motor, the more torque it offers. The more torque you have, the more power you can get out of the bike. there are three main motor positions on an e-bike, which are dependent on function and preferred riding styles. A front hub motor fits into the center of the front wheel. Because the drive is in the front wheel, where your steering is, it provides the feel of a front wheel drive car. Then there is the rear hub motor, which you’ll find on mid-range models. At the top end of the range is the central drive motor, mounted into the frame. As it is under your center of balance and low on the bike, it doesn’t affect your stability – it makes it feel a lot more like a normal bike.

Sensor: Another key component of an e-bike is the sensor, which can be one of two types. A speed sensor automatically engages the motor once you begin pedaling to provide assistance to your ride.  In contrast, the torque sensor is more intuitive, responding with just a small amount of assistance to match your speed when moving through slow traffic.

Most E-bikes also come with a display screen. It provides info on battery level, range, speed, distance, trip distance and assistance modes. More advanced e-bikes offer additional features, including fitness tracking and sat nav/GPS. Looking to delve into the world of E-bikes.
