When you get on to your e-bike for the first time you will discover nostalgia. You will be transported to the days where you felt happy and excited riding down a hill on your traditional bicycle and the cool breeze kissing your body and playing with your hair. Riding an e-bike will give you that similar feeling throughout your journey on your e-bike.

Let us get to know the different types of e-bikes

First up is the pedal-assist also known as the pedelec. The word pedal-assist suggests that you’re still gonna be pedaling the bike and putting some power into it but you get a little extra boost to help you along the way through the motor. A Pedelec provides power only when you are pedaling. Pedelecs have a sensor to detect the speed and force of pedaling.

A lot of pedal-assist bikes have different levels of assistance - low, medium, or high assist. Some bikes launching now have as many as seven levels of pedal assist. Low pedal assists you to provide more pedal power and get more of a workout. A medium pedal-assist can be a good balance of your pedal power and the motor power. In high pedal-assist mode if you want to get somewhere quickly and with minimal effort, this could be useful if you want to get to work without sweating too much.

The torque sensor and the Cadence sensor systems are the types of pedal assists. The torque sensor pedal assist system measures the amount of power you’re putting out into the pedals and it will increase or decrease the electrical system based on your pedaling power. This system has a very intuitive ride field because they emulate your pedal power. The cadence sensor pedal-assist system can provide assistance purely based on the level of assist you have selected and will not increase or decrease based on your actual pedal power.

The second kind of e-bike is Power on-demand or Throttle only. The throttle activates the motor. On this kind of e-bike, pedaling isn’t required to benefit from the motor. Crank the throttle when you want the power and the e-bike moves forward without any additional pedaling.

There are 3 types of throttles: Thumb throttle, full twist throttle, and half twist throttle.

In thumb throttle, you will not get a sore wrist. People complain that when you use a half twist or full twist thumb throttle after you’re going in a straight line for a while, your wrist is putting pressure on the throttle it can get sore so for such people thumb throttle is suitable. The downside of thumb throttle is that your thumb can get tired over time especially if you are in an area where you’re doing full speed straight ahead for a long time.

Half twist and full twist throttles can be easier to modulate on rough terrain. They are better for people with arthritis or just don’t have as good mobility with their fingers because you’re using your entire hand to twist the throttle you don’t have to worry about just one thumb getting tired or aching from long straight sections.
